Adaptable. Honest. Considerate. Diligent.
Derek's journey to Occupational Therapy has led him around the globe to this small slice of paradise called Perth. Derek was first introduced to occupational therapy while working in China as an education assistant for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He was impressed by the diversity of the profession and on a long shot, applied, moved and completed his Masters of Occupational Therapy here at Curtin University of Technology.
Prior to joining our team, Derek worked in different roles and mainly in the community and Aged Care sectors. Derek enjoy's helping others and enabling their ability to achieve whatever goal they set for themselves in order to improve their overall quality of life. At this stage of his career, he would like to continue developing his clinical expertise, with an interest in universal design and creating spaces that are not only accessible for all, but also aesthetically pleasing.
Originally from Staten Island, New York, Derek moved to Perth in 2014 after spending two years in Shanghai, China studying Mandarin and teaching English. Outside of work, he enjoys being active and healthy. Derek is always travelling and exploring different parts of regional WA and loves experiencing new cultures and being put out of his comfort zone. He spends his free time either playing basketball socially, training Brazilian Jujitsu or breaking a sweat at the gym. Occasionally you will find Derek reading a book; although often an audio book or long form podcast. Derek is committed to being a regular plasma donor at Australian Red cross Lifeblood, usually donating once a month.
Since moving to Australia, Derek has become a bit of a coffee snob. He prefers his coffee like rocket fuel, a long macchiato topped up with one sugar. Derek loves food, and is always introducing the office to a new cuisine! As a mixed Eurasian American, like himself, his preferences for food are mixed. Though Derek secretly loves McDonalds, but doesn’t indulge too often, & on the weekends loves trying new restaurants, particularly Hot Pot (Steamboat), Korean BBQ, or Dim Sum. On the weekends Derek is either playing basketball with his mates, at home cooking, going out to the gym or eating out. Derek highly recommends two restaurants; Lepak Kopitiam or Tea Garden, both very delicious, authentic Malaysian cuisine.
