Raised in Albany, Mikayla saw from a young age how her grandpa who was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s Disease and how this affected his work as a farmer and his life in general. Over the years she was able see how different services and health professionals were able to help him to ensure he could stay living on the farm and doing the things he enjoyed. Mikayla was particularly enthused seeing what the Occupational Therapist could do to help him, especially in the area of assistive technology and home modifications. So after graduating High School, she moved initially into architecture with a passion for universal design however soon realised she wanted to be more involved in helping people first hand. This decision led Mikayla to choosing to study Occupational Therapy which allowed her to explore both passions for universal design and working to help people every day.
Mikayla has always been interested in the human body and the way it works. Occupational Therapy looks at the science behind the way the body works and allows the therapist to find creative solutions to problem solve and ensure the individual can still participate in the activities important to them. As someone who is creative and constantly problem solving, Mikayla thinks Occupational Therapy is an amazing career. Her role at Occupational Therapy Services Group allows her to work with many people each day, who have a range of needs, and build amazing long term relationships. Mikayla enjoys being constantly challenged to provide the best care for each individual and make sure they are able to do the things they love, just as she can. Mikayla looks forward to gaining experience in all of the services offered at Occupational Therapy Services Group, especially driving and assistive technology.
Outside of occupational therapy, Mikayla is busy looking after her Aussie Shepherd puppy Cleo, who well and truly keeps her on her toes. When not chasing after Cleo (and the toilet paper she has just unravelled), Mikayla is playing hockey for Curtin University or training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. On the off chance she is able to escape the beautiful mayhem here in Perth, Mikayla loves to go home to Albany to relax with family and friends. On a typical weekend you will find Mikayla training Jiu Jitsu, grabbing brunch at Laika or Mary Street Bakery (Fried Chicken Pancakes with Chilli Maple, I’m looking at you), playing hockey and then enjoying a pint (Probably at Blasta Brewery!).
