Ruth is a qualified occupational therapist and holds accredited status with OT Australia in maintaining currency in professional knowledge and skills. She has 45 years’ experience in assessment and intervention techniques with a range of disabilities and is a qualified assessor in the administration of the Assessment and Motor Process Skills (AMPS), the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and the Functional Assessment Measure (FIM+FAM).
Ruth joined Occupational Therapy Services Group in 2019 (after a short lived 4 months retirement) and undertakes functional assessments & provides support for the prescription and provision of assistive technology to participants under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Ruth also has experience working with a wide range of diagnostic groups including Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), spinal injury, amputation, traumatic upper limb injury, burns, cerebral palsy, general orthopaedic and neurological conditions, autism spectrum disorder and mental health.
Ruth’s previous employment was in the medico legal consultancy area for 25 years preparing Occupational Therapy reports and expert witness opinion for both plaintiff and defendant legal representation.
Ruth has a strong background in housing modification and purpose building design for persons with a disability. Ruth worked for seven years with architects and builders in the design of wheelchair accessible housing and is conversant with housing needs of clients with physical, sensory, motor and social challenges.
Ruth has extensive knowledge and experience with complex equipment and assistive technology, and operated the clinic-based service for cerebral palsy clients for 14 years. During this time she developed clinical skills in assessment, prescription and fabrication of specialised postural seating systems, prescription of manual and powered wheelchairs, and assessment and prescription of assistive technology interfacing with wheelchair and communication control.
As a lecturer for occupational therapy assistants working in aged care, Ruth is experienced in the contribution of occupational therapy in gerontology. Her lecture presentations include pathology of ageing, physical implications, behaviour and dementia, objectives and planning of activity programs.
